Gianturco Expandable Metallic Biliary Stents : Preliminary Clinical Evaluation

Abstract

|
The gold-coated expandable metallic stent(Gianturco type) was used in 21 patients with obstructive jaundice. from march 1991 to February 1992, two-six connected metallic stents of 8-12mm in diameter were placed in 3 patients with benign biliary
stricture and 18 patients with benign biliary stricture and 18 patients with malignant biliary stricture in Wonkwang University Hospital.
All stents were placed successfully without any technical failure or procedural morbidity or mortality. All patients complained abdominal pain for 1-7 days after the stent placement.
In a follow up period of 3-42 weeks, reocclusions were observed in four of 18 patients with malignant strictures(22%), 3-20weeks after stent insertion. Nine patients died 3-27weeks(mean : 13.6weeks) after the stent placement. The remaining 12
patients
are alive 1-42weeks (mean : 14.2weeks) after stent implantation.
The Gianturco expandable biliary stent is suggested as an effective treatment for benign and malignant biliary obstruction.
